The Saginaw and Manistee Lumber Company was founded circa in the state of Michigan. In the company opened a lumber mill in Williams, Arizona Territory. The company virtually built the town of Williams and supplied the town with both power and water .   Mill residue volume (excluding bark) and lumber production were used to produce mill residue factors (i.e., cubic volume of residue produced per MBF lumber tally). Mill residue factors were made and updated somewhat differently depending on the data available for various states and years.

The utilisation of wood residues for energy production in the forest products industry is not a new concept and has been commonly practiced for a long time. With the growth of fossil fuel dependency for electricity and industrial uses the forest industries began seeing wood residues as no longer an energy source, but as a waste product.

2 About 90% of the timber in of wood products sold on the European market is sourced from European forests. These forests are very largely sustainably managed3 and in most areas their surface area er, only just over 60% of the net annual increment is harvested5. Of the western states which saw its share of such operations Arizona hosted some of the fewest logging railroads. However, as Kramer Adams notes in his book, "Logging Railroads Of The West" (published in ), these systems have often been difficult to trace.

At the time they went about their daily business, often with haste and speed, without giving a thought to preserving their operations. Historic Construction Materials & Techniques The evolution of building materials and construction techniques is a fascinating subject.

The Craft Of Timber Framing. Timber framing is just the kind of traditional craft that we at Hearthstone specialize in. Meticulously practiced for centuries as the preferred method of building construction, the trade and tradition nearly died in the early ’s as steel mills, high-production saw mills, wire nails, and mass production psychology replaced the art and craft of timber framing.

Historical wood products industry changes are discussed, as well as trends in harvest, production, mill residue, and sales. Also examined are employment and worker earnings in the state's primary.
